PRECURE — DIGITAL HEALTH APP

Redesigning preventive care— Getting ahead of injury

Reducing injuries through muscle monitoring & AI

PreCure develops AI-powered wearable devices that collect data around muscle load and strain, helping people reduce repetitive strain injuries through feedback and insights.

PreCure reached out to Above to envision the User Experience and UI for a digital health app to accompany their MLI® Elbow, a smart IoT wearable sleeve, which analyses muscular activity and provides biofeedback using machine learning. Our mission was to design an app that could turn a sea of complex data into an intuitive and approachable experience that users can rely on long-term as a preventive tool.

CHALLENGE

Bringing biofeedback to users to understand harmful patterns

Repetitive movements at work can be the cause for one of the largest and most costly category of injury in the workplace (nearly 30% of all workers’ compensation costs in the US): The Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD). MSD comes with a lot of pain and suffering that could be avoided, often times, by preventive measures and body monitoring.

Our main challenge was to design a digital platform that connects to the smart wearable and ultimately reduces the user’s risk of developing MSD. We asked ourselves: How can UX and UI Design come together to empower people to reflect on signals from their muscles and take better care of their bodies early on?

APPROACH

An app that turns complex data into an intuitive experience

Together with the PreCure team, we set out to create an app design that could be tested and iterated through their MVP release. Having gathered data from 30 users through a first round of low-fidelity prototype testing, the team could extract valuable insights around the user journey and collected data.

The challenge was to not only give users access to biofeedback of the lower arm collected by the wearable, but to also give context and perspective to that data in order for users to take actions and adjust their physical behaviours.

OUTCOME

A journal for your muscle activity and pain

Through UX design — journey mapping, wireframes, prototypes — UI design and a design system, we delivered the full app specification ready for development.

The app we designed functions like a digital diary that connects to the smart sleeve, and motivates users to track muscle activity and report connected pain on a daily basis. Easy-to-grasp numbers and graphs show the users how much muscle strain they inflict on their lower arm every hour. In addition, they can keep track of their pain by recording it in a journal. This allows users to easily compare data from recent days, weeks or even months to identify harmful patterns that trigger pain or cause injury in the long-run — and adjust accordingly.

Most importantly, the new intuitive experience we created, helps redesign users’ behaviours and habits in order steer clear from developing irreversible chronic disorders.
